- Story Text: After weeks of street battles between Houthi rebels and loyalists of exiled Yemeni President Abed Rabbou Mansour Hadi, residents in Aden's Dar Saad neighbourhood began cleaning their streets on Sunday (May 10) in a bid to return life in their neighbourhood to normal.
Yemen's dominant Houthi group accepted a five-day humanitarian ceasefire proposed by its adversary Saudi Arabia on Sunday but said it would respond to any violations of the pause.
"Thank God we have cleared all the streets and opened the roads so that the people can feel safe and reassured," said member of the pro-Hadi militia, Ahmad Nabil on Sunday (May 10).
The Saudi-led coalition said on Saturday (May 9) it had hit Yemen with 130 air strikes over the previous 24 hours, and a senior UN official said some attacks violated international law.
"These young men are now starting to cleanse this neighbourhood of rubbish and there is a return to normal life in Dar Saad. We hope that our brothers in charge of relief rush to aid our citizens. What we lack is aid and relief, and we thank 'Operation Decisive Storm' and the return of hope and King Salman," said resident of Dar Saad, Sameer Hamed.
International concern about the humanitarian situation has grown as the strikes have killed more than 1,300 people, sent locals fleeing from their homes and destroyed infrastructure, leading to shortages of food, medicine and fuel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
