- Story Text: The U.N. Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression said on Monday (July 13) he was "extremely concerned" about the future of Hong Kong following the adoption of a new national security law.
"I am extremely concerned about the future of Hong Kong particularly with the adoption of the national security law," David Kaye told a Geneva briefing from his Californian home, adding that it will be important to see whether authorities use their discretion in interpreting the new law to impose restrictions on freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
He said although China has not ratified the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights), human rights mechanisms still need to be active in Hong Kong.
The new national security law punishes secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison and allows mainland Chinese security agents to operate officially in Hong Kong for the first time.
