- Story Text:Police in Nice said they fined between 130-140 people over the course of an hour's patrol on Thursday (August 13) as officers went around the city centre to enforce the compulsory wearing of masks.
Police chief Jean-Christophe Flament told teams of the "zero tolerance" policy, and that those caught not wearing a mask would be fined 135 euros.
The French health ministry reported 2,669 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours on Thursday, setting a new post-lockdown daily high for the second day in a row and taking the country's cumulative total of cases to 209,365.
French authorities have already started to tighten public hygiene rules, with cities such as Lille, Nice and Toulouse and Paris ordering people to wear masks in busy pedestrian streets.
