- Story Text:Rising numbers of coronavirus cases in Croatia failed to discourage partygoers from all over Europe who arrived for a a four-day music festival which started on Thursday (August 20).
AWAKE Croatia 2020, an annual trance music event, went ahead despite a recent rise in coronavirus cases and some countries tightening measures for travel to Balkan holiday hotspot for holiday.
With a reduced capacity of 1,000 partygoers, the event takes place on two-kilometre long Zrce beach in Novalja on the island of Pag.
Tourists said they felt safe with social distancing rules being observed in clubs and restaurants.
On Thursday, Britain and Slovenia added Croatia to its quarantine list while Germany advised against travel to the regions of Sibenik-Knin and Split Dalmatia, which are popular with tourists, after the public health agency declared them coronavirus risk regions, making tests for returnees mandatory.
Croatia escaped the worst of the first wave of the pandemic owing to swift lockdowns and a lack of tourist arrivals at the tail-end of winter, promoting itself as a safe destination for tourists.
But on Thursday it registered 255 new infections, bringing the total number of cases to 7,329.
