- Story Text: Filipinos expressed disappointment on Friday (September 11) after racists remarks from both Filipino and Korean netizens were posted on social media sparked by a controversial post by a Filipino social media influencer.
Bella Poarch, a Filipino based in Hawaii who has over 15 million followers on TikTok and over 2 million on Instagram, posted a clip of her dancing, revealing the Rising Sun flag tattoo on her arm.
The flag, which many Koreans find offensive, is associated with Japanese imperialism and Japan's actions towards Korea while under its colonial rule.
The hashtag #cancelkorea trended online after some Korean netizens expressed anger with derogatory racial slurs that insulted not just Poarch but Filipinos as a whole.
Some Filipino netizens, however, expressed their anger at the racist remarks from Korean social media users.
"When #cancelkorea trended, the goal was for Filipinos to call out the derogatory statements that Koreans said. But what happened instead was the racism that they saw was also fought with racism. There were statements that were hypocritical to the goal of the hashtag because you're trying to call out racism but you're doing it through racism," said Manila-based K-Pop fan Dan Gambe.
Poarch later apologised for her tattoo and vowed to have her tattoo covered or removed. "I did not know the history behind this tattoo and I will educate others about it." Poarch said in a post on social media.
