- Story Text: Residents in the southern districts of Vallecas and Carabanchel, two of the areas where a partial lockdown was imposed since September 21, have been upset about how restrictions affect streets differently depending on what neighbourhood was under lockdown and called for rules to be applied equally throughout the city.
Bars in the lockdown side of via Carpetana street have had to shut down at 22.00 (20.00 GMT) while in the other side they are allowed to open until 1.00 a.m. (23.00 GMT).
With 859 cases per 100,000 people, according to the World Health Organization, the Madrid region is the worst COVID-19 hotspot in Europe and the central government, backed by a number of other regions, decided to step in after a bitter spat with local authorities.
With the new restrictions which come into effect at 22:00 (20:00 GMT), 4.8 million people in Madrid and nine nearby municipalities will see borders closed to outsiders for non-essential visits, with only travel for work, school, doctors' visits or shopping allowed.
A curfew for bars and restaurants will be moved to 23:00 (21:00 GMT) from 01:00 (23:00 GMT) in the areas that were not in partial lockdown.
