- Title: Nigeria: Civil War
- Date: 1st April 1968
- Summary: In the Spring, Federal troops steadily compressed the area controlled by the Ibos who had declared the separate state of Biafra. Blazing refineries lit up the Federal advance into Port Harcourt. The capture of the city sealed the isolation of the Ibo-controlled territory and sent thousands of refugees fleeing inland. The outside world became intensely aware that vast numbers of people in the battle areas were facing starvation. Hundreds of children were said to be dying every day. Organisations rushed in relief supplies and a long wrangle developed about how they were to be got through to the refugees. The supplies piled up in warehouses in Lagos and on the Spanish Isle of Fernando Poo. Agreement was finally reached for mercy flights under strict Red Cross supervision, and relief supplies began moving again. NOTE: Date is approximate.
