- Story Text: The festival of lights, Diwali, left New Delhi residents to cope with alarmingly high levels of air pollution on Sunday (November 15) as air quality deteriorated sharply overnight after firecrackers were set off despite a ban in the Indian capital.
Lighting firecrackers was banned in New Delhi and steep fines for any violations were announced but many flouted the rules on Diwali, with the loud noise echoing way into early hours of Sunday.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in New Delhi stood at 473 on a scale of 500, indicating "severe" conditions that are hazardous, according to the federal pollution control board's guidance.
New Delhi ranks among the world's most polluted cities, with air quality usually worsening at this time of year, when smoke from firecrackers celebrating the Hindu festival of lights and crops burnt in nearby states envelops the city of more than 20 million. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
