Category 5 Hurricane Iota left the Caribbean islands of San Andres and Providencia devastated with homes and infrastructure destroyed and people evacuating to safety.
Now, one Colombian rescue organization is making sure that the animals still on the island are not forgotten.
Juliana del Castillo is the director of Fundacion Animal Heart Islands and on Friday (November 20) she accompanied police on San Andres as they captured a dog in poor physical condition.
"We can't sleep thinking about how the little animals are suffering all the bad weather of the hurricane without being able to protect themselves," del Castillo said.
In addition to rescuing sick animals and providing them with veterinarian care, del Castillo's organization is also providing pet food to people who are still on the island and who may not be able to afford to purchase it after the Hurricane's destruction.
During normal times, Fundación Animal Heart Islands dedicates its efforts to spaying and neutering animals and finding new adoptive homes for strays.
