Dozens of people lined up outside the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London to catch a glimpse of former One Direction member Zayn Malik, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and other celebrities at the fifth annual Asian Awards in London on Friday (April 17).
Khan greeted fans and posed for selfies before making his way to the venue entrance. The Indian actor has been working in the industry since the late 1980s and is one of the biggest names in entertainment in the subcontinent and across the world.
"I've been working for so long that sometimes I feel that these kind of appreciations are very important time and again. So I'm really glad, I feel very thrilled that I'm getting it, very grateful and extremely gracious of everyone who is giving me this award," Khan said about receiving recognition for his contributions to cinema.
Khan added that he felt "very, very humbled" and "really thrilled" to see up close the enthusiasm of his followers.
The arrival of Zayn Malik, who was accompanied by his mother Trishia, also caused a huge commotion. The former One Director member made his first official public appearance since leaving the top-selling pop group last month. He showed off a newly-shaved head and a nose stud.
Malik announced his departure from One Direction on March 25, saying he wanted to live a normal life.
"I'd like to apologize to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight," he said in a statement on One Direction's Facebook page at the time.
Music producer and DJ, Naughty Boy (real name Shahid Khan), attended the event as well. The British producer has collaborated with Malik and even released a sample track featuring the singer on Twitter nearly three weeks ago. When asked whether there were plans to release further music with Malik, Naughty Boy responded: "It wasn't a single and that's the thing, none of it's like - there's no campaign, there's no plan, there's no agenda. It's just, you know, I mean you're music people and you're creative, even as friends, still creating you know. There's no plan."
Naughty Boy, who had a number one hit single with Sam Smith called "La La La", said Malik seemed to be more relaxed since quitting One Direction.
"Well I think he's more relaxed just because he feels more in control, I don't think that's to do with making music, I think that's about his life, so I don't think we should get caught up with is there a big plan for music," he explained.
"Bend It Like Beckham" and "Bride and Prejudice" director Gurinder Chadha weighed in on Malik's post-One Direction career and hinted at a possible partnership.
"Well actually we've already met, we've already spoken, so we'll probably do something. And he trained as an actor first, so he's actually an actor first and then became part of the band. So I think he's - you know I think what he's doing is staying true to his heart and that's all you can ever do, I think," said Chadha.
The Asian Awards aim to pay tribute to Asian success across a wide range of fields, such as business, the arts, technology, politics and sports. Other guests included actor and model Jamie Campbell Bower, singer Leona Lewis and fashion designer Ozwald Boateng. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
