- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter on Thursday (April 9) arrived in South Korea for his three-day visit to the country.
This is his first trip to the Asia-Pacific region since becoming Pentagon chief, working to boost the U.S. strategic rebalance to the region, the department said.
Carter is scheduled to meet South Korean President Park Geun-hye and his South Korean counterpart Han Min-koo on Friday (April 10) to reaffirm U.S. commitment to South Korea's security.
He is expected to discuss the administration's plans to push ahead with the rebalance to the Asia-Pacific that President Barack Obama announced in his 2012 defence strategic guidance. The rebalance called for an intensified focus on the region by the Pentagon as well as other government agencies.
After the meeting, Carter and Han will visit navel fleet to commemorate South Korean sailors who died during Choenan naval warship sank, which killed 46 sailors, according to South Korean defense ministry. South Korea has said North Korea torpedoed the ship. However, North Korea has denied that it was responsible.
Before the visit to South Korea, Carter visited Japan from Tuesday (April 7) to Thursday (April 9) and discussed bilateral security and other issues ahead of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to Washington at the end of April. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
