- Story Text: Around 30 amateur skateboarders gathered on Saturday (February 27) at a downtown gallery house in Cairo, showing off their jumps and flips and competing for up to 10,000 EGP in first-prize money.
Dubbed "Mind the Gap", the event was hosted by the famous energy drinks company, Red Bull, and is the first of its kind in Egypt.
Out of 40 participants, three skateboarders were hailed the winners, with 21-year-old Yassin El-Attar winning first place, earning a 10k cheque and brand-new skateboard.
"It takes a lot of energy because the skater is always jumping, pushing, sliding, falling, "said El-Attar, who has been skateboarding for 10 years.
Skateboarders who came in second and third place were awarded a 5k and 3k cheque.
The event was restricted to a maximum of 40 participants, and 250 attendees due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mask-wearing was mandatory, although many did not comply.
"The idea behind it is that we want to have a tournament for this sport here in Egypt," said event organizer Amr Zaki, adding that the tournament aims to promote skateboarding in the country.
