- Story Text: Dozens of people gathered on Friday (March 5) on Moscow's Red Square to commemorate the 68th anniversary of Joseph Stalin's death.
People brought flowers, Soviet flags and portraits of Stalin as part of a ceremony organised by the Russian Communist Party.
Stalin, who was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953, is widely reviled as a dictator responsible for millions of deaths.
Although Stalin's rule was marked by mass repression, labour camps and famine, he is hailed as a hero by supporters across the former Soviet Union who say the country could not have defeated Nazi Germany or become a superpower without his leadership.
Since former KBG officer Vladimir Putin came to power, Russia's beleaguered liberals have accused the Kremlin of helping to burnish Stalin's image in order to justify its own increasingly tight political control.
