- Story Text: Police in India's northeastern Chirang district of Assam state recovered arms and ammunitions cache from the forest area on Wednesday (March 10).
A search operation was launched in the Chirang Reserve Forest by the police during which the recovery was made.
"We were successful in this operation and we have recovered these arms and ammunitions including, one AK-47 rifle along with 90 bullets, three pistols and eight bullets, said Inspector-General of Police, Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, L..R. Bishnoi.
An investigation into the matter is underway.
India's northeastern states have been facing insurgencies since independence from Britain in 1947. Dozens of tribal organisations are fighting Indian rule, demanding a separate homeland or greater autonomy.
Although violence in Assam and the wider northeast has fallen in the last few years as more militant groups have called ceasefires, attacks by one community against another are not uncommon. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
