- Story Text: Britain is marking the anniversary of its first coronavirus lockdown, as the country is on a cautious road to easing restrictions and a vaccine rollout deemed successful.
On March 23 last year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the first lockdown to try to stem the spread of the coronavirus, telling Britain that people should "stay at home", part of a slogan on saving lives that has become a common refrain since then.
Britain has the fifth highest number of deaths in the world from COVID-19 at 126,172. But a fast start to the vaccine rollout has helped it recover from an aggressive second wave of the pandemic.
Johnson, who came under fire for moving too slowly last year to tackle the first and second waves of the pandemic, praised the "great spirit" shown by Britain in tackling COVID-19.
A year on, more than half of the adult population has been vaccinated and Johnson's roadmap to ease England's lockdown is due to end on June 21 at the earliest, when most of the restrictions will be lifted.
