- Story Text: For more than 22 years, 73-year-old Gyula Laszlo has been shoeing eggs in his Markaz workshop.
Saying he got "infected" by the hobby, he drills a pattern of tiny holes into a hollowed-out hen's egg, inserting a network of metal threads as a mount for a miniature horseshoe.
Once considered the ultimate test of skill for a blacksmith, the tradition is now kept alive by Laszlo and a handful of other artisans.
Techniques have diversified over the decades, and Laszlo has developed his own, putting shoes on both sides and making the egg "a lot more decorative."
Laszlo makes several hundred eggs every year, and the best ones go on display in his own small exhibition in an old village outbuilding.
He says anyone with time can learn this craft: "All you need is perseverance, and perhaps a little dexterity."
