  • Story Text: Drivers formed long queues in Turkey's capital of Ankara on Friday (April 30) as police set up checkpoints to monitor permission documents on the first day of the strictest lockdown authorities imposed to curb a surge in coronavirus infections and deaths in the country.
    Under the new restrictions, Turks will have to stay indoors except for essential shopping trips and urgent medical treatment. Certain groups, including emergency service workers and employees in the food and manufacturing sectors, will be exempt.
    Ankara has signed a deal for 50 million doses of Russia's Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine that will start arriving next month and should help address a short-term fall in supply,
    Turkey has until now been using COVID-19 vaccines developed by China's Sinovac Biotech Ltd and by Pfizer and BioNTech. It has carried out 22 million inoculations, with 13.55 million people having received the first dose.
    On Friday, President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey has enough doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at the moment and does not have any issues with procurement.
