- Story Text: Salah al-Mulla's debut as a 'tabla' player did not get much approval from neighbours whom he would wake up in the middle of the night while rehearsing his rhythms in a narrow street of his popular district in Iraq's southern city of Basra.
But today, he and a team of musicians specialised in 'Khashaba' music are in high demand during popular celebrations and concerts.
"'Khashaba' (music) is old. It dates back to more or less the 1940's, 50's," Mulla told Reuters while rehearsing with fellow musicians in his living room, adding that the music, distinctive through its rhythms, is played today in Iraq's south and in the Gulf.
A popular instrument to play 'Khashaba' music is the 'Khishba', a drum made out of wood and named after the Arabic word for wood, 'khashab'.
Mulla learned to play 'Khashaba' from his father and has been in the profession for 12 years.
