- Story Text: Hundreds of mostly young people descended on Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London to get vaccinated against COVID-19 on Sunday (June 20).
The home of the English Premier League soccer club was converted to a mass vaccination centre this weekend as part of a drive to get more Londoners, especially young people, vaccinated.
On Saturday (June 19), thousands of young people were vaccinated at centres at the soccer stadiums of West Ham, Chelsea and Charlton Athletic. The vaccines were available to anyone over 18 who hadn't received one yet.
Britain recorded 9,284 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday and six new deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.
Although lower than recent days, the number of new cases reflects an upward trend in recent weeks driven by the spread of the more infectious Delta variant first detected in India.
The mass vaccination events across London over the weekend are part of the government's efforts to speed up its already-advanced programme to limit the impact of the variant.
