- Story Text:Carlos Diaz, the psychologist who treated Diego Maradona in the weeks before his death last November, gave his statements on Wednesday (June 23) before prosecutors who have accused him of an alleged "simple homicide with eventual intent."
In statements to the media, Diaz again defended his position and said there had been no "wrongdoing".
''Undoubtedly, my work as a psychologist, an addiction specialist, did not have any kind of interference in the fatal outcome of Maradona, which hurts us all and it should also be noted that there was no type of criminal plan, as has been said, to kill Maradona,'' he said upon leaving the prosecutor's office in capital Buenos Aires.
Argentine prosecutors are hearing evidence involving seven people accused of contributing to the death of soccer player Diego Armando Maradona.
Maradona, the revered former Boca Juniors and Napoli star who had alcohol and drug addictions for many years, died on November 25 last year from heart failure at the age of 60 after undergoing brain surgery earlier that month.
A medical board formally appointed to investigate Maradona's death concluded that several members of the star's medical team acted in an "inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner," and said he was not properly monitored before he died.
Questions are also being made to Maradona's doctor, neurosurgeon, and personal physician, amongst others.
When the medical board's report was presented to prosecutors in May, it accused the defendants of carrying out a plan with a "criminal purpose" and as part of a deficient care system around Maradona that contributed to his death.
If found guilty, all seven could face between eight and 25 years in prison.
