I noticed how children and their parents react. It is important that parents take advantage of this additional tool to educate children. When parents come here together with their children, they teach them, children like the process and absorb the information. Then a child drops a bottle inside and sees an immediate result. It brings joy and happiness. And everyone is excited and wants the project to thrive. We set the most important goal to install such boxes in all Kyiv schools, then all over Ukraine and across the world." - Story Text: Students at a Kyiv school have been learning about saving the environment and helping those in need by using a special recycling machine which uses plastic bottles as currency.
After dropping a bottle into the machine, the pupils can select what they would like to spend the money on.
By pressing a button on the machine, they can choose between buying food for stray animals or making a donation to help elderly people or children with special needs like hearing-impairments or Down's Syndrome.
After testing a pilot version of the machine in one of Kyiv's residential areas and a city shopping mall, project founder Rufat Raimov noticed that children were the most frequent users.
"A child drops a bottle inside and sees an immediate result. It brings joy and happiness. And everyone is excited and wants the project to thrive," Raimov told Reuters.
By installing more machines in schools in Ukraine's capital, and then across the country, the initiative aims to promote environmental awareness among younger generations.
Since the project was launched in October 2020, more than five tonnes of plastic have been collected from six machines.
Raimov said companies across the IT, retail and hospitality industries had already placed dozens of orders for new machines.
