- Story Text: Indian designer Vaishali Shadangule held her first show at the Paris Fashion week on Thursday (July 8) in the bucolic garden of a Parisian high school.
She is the first Indian woman invited as guest member of the event, and only the second Indian fashion designer, after Rahul Mishra in 2019.
"It is a big responsibility for me," she said. "We always say 'made in India', but we don't say 'this garment and design, the international platform, it is from India'."
After a six-months-long selection process with several virtual interviews, the 43-year-old designer was selected amongst candidates from all around the world.
Vaishali S's 'Breath' collection is inspired by nature and its shapes. Every piece is made from traditionally hand-woven fabric. It also echoes the COVID-19 pandemic "where everyone was struggling for breath," the designer, who herself suffered of COVID, said.
India has been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 30 million people were infected in the country and more than 400,000 died of COVID-related symptoms.
Shadangule feels like her presence at the Paris fashion week could bring hope in this "difficult period".
"I will represent India, Indian textile, Indian craftsmanship. So I think, for me and for (Vaishali S workers), it definitely is positive," she said.
