- Story Text: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday (July 19) the bloc must do more on climate protection and adaptation after floods devasted parts of western Europe last week.
"We all see these days how important it is to invest in our fight against climate change," the president told reporters during her trip to Prague, where she presented the commission's approval of the Czech national recovery and resilience plan.
Von der Leyen added that the financial and human costs of extreme weather would be high if EU countries failed to act quickly.
She said the extreme weather events were becoming more frequent and intensive but added the bloc must be resilient.
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said Prague planned to spend 42% of its 7-bln euro share of the EU's recovery scheme on reaching climate-neutrality goals.
In Germany, the death toll from the country's worst natural disaster in almost six decades rose above 160 with some 170 people still listed as missing in western parts of the country on Monday.
