- Story Text: Australia's New South Wales state on Friday (July 23) reported its biggest daily rise in new COVID-19 cases this year, with 136 cases recorded. Officials have described the situation as a "national emergency".
Premier Gladys Berejiklian flagged the likelihood that stay-home orders for the country's biggest city Sydney would be extended beyond the current end date of July 30. Sydneysiders are feeling both "disappointment and frustration" as the city's COVID-19 outbreak escalates,
In neighbouring Victoria state, Premier Daniel Andrews called for a "ring of steel" to be placed around Sydney to stop the spread of the Delta strain, which has spread across state borders throughout the country.
With just over 32,500 COVID-19 cases and 916 deaths, Australia has fared much better than many other developed economies, but stop-and-start lockdowns and a sluggish vaccine rollout have frustrated residents. More than half the country's population is currently in lockdown.
