- Story Text: Pakistanis welcomed in the new year in the early hours of Sunday (January 1) with fireworks and a music concert in the city of Karachi, the country's biggest city.
A firework display dominated Port Grand, a food and drink and entertainment complex built along the waterfront of the 19th century Native Jetty Bridge.
The complex, opened to the public on May 28 2011, is a hub of shopping, dining, cultural and coastal recreational activities in the port city.
Thousands of people gathered on the streets near the venue in celebration. With the setting off fireworks, the youth enjoyed music and swayed to the beat of drums.
"The year 2017 has begun. I pray for the nation to live in peace. May the new year bring happiness to all," said Imtiaz Hussain, resident of Karachi, who had arrived to watch the fireworks.
"The people of Pakistan should live in peace, unity and harmony with each other. They should love each other and abstain from fighting and quarrelling with each other," said Amena, a teacher.
Another spectacular fireworks display was set off from Pakistan's tallest skyscraper which is still under construction, a 62-floor tower and complex of offices, luxury flats and malls with Arabian Sea views, scheduled to open next year.
Special new year programs were being held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Peshawar and other cities. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
