- Story Text: A new baby camel joined its herd in Prague Zoo on Thursday (July 29) continuing a "very successful" year for baby animals at the establishment.
More than 700 new arrivals have appeared in the zoo since the beginning of the year, spokeswoman Lucie Dosedelova said.
Among them are several rare and endangered species, including the spiny turtle and the Chacoan peccary.
The breeding of the peccaries is a particular success, the zoo said on its website. The species was considered to be extinct in the wild in 1971 but has since recovered, although numbers remain small.
The zoo was closed from Oct. 6 last year during the Czech Republic's coronavirus lockdown and only re-opened in April.
Dosedelova said visitors numbers from the Czech Republic had been high since the re-opening, but due to lower numbers of tourists arriving in Prague foreign visitors were still low.
