- Story Text: People gathered at a makeshift memorial in front of the Reina nightclub in Istanbul on Tuesday (January 3), where a gun attack killed 39 people on New Year's day. The venue remained closed amid strong security.
A huge banner was lifted in the morning reading 'We won't give up for tomorrow' over a makeshift memorial close to the entrance of the nightclub to pay tribute to the victims of the attack, many of which were foreigners.
Nationals of Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya, Israel, a Turkish-Belgian dual citizen and a Franco-Tunisian woman were among those killed, officials said.
Turkish authorities are close to fully identifying the gunman responsible for the attack on the nightclub and have detained eight other people, the government's spokesman, deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday (January 2).
Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility for the attack. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
