- Story Text: A baby orangutan charmed crowds at a Czech zoo on Tuesday (January 3) when it was presented to the public for the first time.
The baby restlessly crawled up and down its mother Nuninka in the Czech town of Usti nad Labem.
Nuninka, a 30-year old female originally from Cambodia, is an experienced mother to four other orangutans.
Her first baby, a female, died but her other three male babies now live in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands and Cologne in Germany as part of the European Breeding Programme, which aims at conserving healthy populations of animals in captivity while safeguarding the genetic health of the animals.
The newborn baby, which hasn't been named yet, is believed to be a female and is healthy and active.
"Delivery was problem-free and very fast. The ape keeper had the chance to watch it. The baby was delivered, the mother cleaned it and now the baby is growing fine, with no problems," zoo spokeswoman Vera Vrabcova told Reuters.
"We still don't know the sex of the baby. The keepers think it will be a girl, but we don't know yet," she added.
Father Nunak, also 30 years old and originally from Cambodia, weighs 130 kilograms and starred in a Czechoslovak film in 1989 called "Two people in the zoo". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
