- Story Text: At least eight people were missing Saturday (August 7) as one of the worst wildfires in the nation scorched through Northern California communities, forest and tinder dry scrub in the Sierra Nevada mountains, destroying a historic gold rush town.
Five of the missing belong to the old mining town of Greenville where blazes leveled most of its downtown, about 160 miles north of Sacramento.
The Dixie fire is the third largest fire in California's history.
The cause of the fire is listed as unknown but remains under investigation.
