- Story Text: The families of 18 Colombian ex-soldiers who were detained in Haiti over the assassination of President Jovenel Moise professed their innocence in Bogota on Monday (August 9).
These protesters are calling on the Colombian government to protest citizens detained in Haiti in the case, saying the former soldiers fell into a trap and are innocent.
According to reports, some protesters met with officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to plead their case.
On July 7, a large group of gunmen killed Moise, 53, on his residence in Petionville, a northern, hillside suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince. Among those arrested for the assassination are 26 Colombians.
The Colombian government says the men suspected of taking part in the assassination were retired members of the armed forces. Many of the former Colombian soldiers went to Haiti to work as bodyguards, but others knew a crime was being planned, according to Colombia's president.
It remains unclear who planned the murder, and with what goal.
