The amount of data that we have on our system, so we were like why we don't use it in a way that will help us, like we have all this data stored, so maybe we can predict the crimes, so through specific algorithms and calculations, the prediction system worked." - Story Text:Dubai police are using artificial intelligence to predict crime and decrease response time in order to make Dubai what they call "one of the safest cities in the world".
"This is an AI (artificial intelligence) system that analyses the data and gives us results...so what it's actually doing is give us hotspots and where are the hotspots in each district, for each patrol, so the police patrol can concentrate on these areas," said Abdullah Rashed al-Maamari, assistant officer at the Dubai command and control center.
The AI algorithm uses historic data of crimes to highlight areas where crime is more common and concentrate patrol officers on such areas. Moreover, the system identifies traffic violations or potential threats, alerting the units on timing and locations.
Despite concerns of increased surveillance, the head of the geographical information system at Dubai Police Khaled al-Falasi reassured that no names are stored in the system but only locations.
Dubai uses almost 300,000 CCTV surveillance cameras across the emirate to support this technology.
