- Story Text: Floods triggered by incessant rains swallowed villages and acres of land in north-eastern India posing a threat to locals.
Damaging houses and forcing occupants to move out, floods left locals in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state's Gorakhpur town without food as they took shelter under makeshift tents on the roadside.
In eastern Siliguri city severe waterlogging in some residential areas submerged roads and inundated houses and residents who stepped out struggled to move through thigh-high water.
Annual rainfall is essential in India as rains support two-thirds of the 1.3 billion population living in rural areas who rely on farming. But excessive rainfalls cause problems like floods, landslides, and water-borne diseases. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
