- Story Text: China on Thursday (August 19) urged Canada to release Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou after the conclusion of her extradition hearings in Vancouver, labelling her detention as lawless and a "human rights violation".
"When Canada acts as an accomplice to the United States, ignoring the fact that Ms Meng Wanzhou has not violated any Canadian laws, arbitrarily detaining Ms Meng Wanzhou for nearly 1,000 days, this way of being an accomplice (to the United States) is textbook coercion," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing in Beijing.
The hearings finished on Wednesday (August 18) and the Chinese tech-giant executive will now await the judge's ruling in her case, the date for which will be set on Oct. 21.
Meng, 49, was arrested at Vancouver International Airport in December 2018 on a warrant from the United States, charging her with fraud for allegedly misleading HSBC about Huawei's business dealings in Iran.
She has claimed innocence and is fighting the extradition, confined to Vancouver and monitored 24/7 by private security that she pays for as part of her bail agreement.
