- Story Text: Afghan refugees said on Wednesday (August 25) they won't budge from UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) office in New Delhi until their demands for refugee cards, resettlement options to a third country, and security are not met.
The Taliban entered Kabul on August 15 after rapidly taking over much of the country, prompting chaotic scenes at the airport as crowds scrambled to escape.
It took the Taliban just over a week to seize control of the country after a lightning sweep 10 that ended in Kabul as government forces, trained for years and equipped by the United States and others at a cost of billions of dollars melted away.
"All we see in the future is darkness. We are sailing through darkness in this life," said a protesting Afghan refugee, Neelaj.
The Afghan refugees have been sitting outside the UNHCR office for three days.
With the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan where they fear a deja vu of the previous era of Afghan rule, refugees settled elsewhere have lost hope and are demanding a more permanent solution to their settlement. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
