- Story Text: At least 26 children from an orphanage in India's Mumbai have tested positive for coronavirus, officials said on Thursday (August 26).
The cases were reported after some children, out of the 95 residing at St. Joseph's Home and Nursery, showed symptoms of the deadly virus.
Out of the total 26 who tested positive, four are admitted to Nair Hospital and the rest are quarantined at Richardson and Cruddas COVID(-19) care facility.
The children were showing mild symptoms and were stable, said the official.
During a second wave of infections in India that peaked in April and May, hundreds of thousands of people died for want of oxygen and medical facilities, and now there are concerns that another third wave will gather during the winter months.
Several Indian states are building facilities with more paediatric beds, plus oxygen, due to concern that children returning to school without being vaccinated will be among the most vulnerable during a third wave of coronavirus infection.
The Maharashtra government has stockpiled medicines, and built facilities for additional pediatric beds and oxygen provisions in new centres in Mumbai and Aurangabad.
India reported on Friday (August 27) 44,658 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, a government statement said. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
