- Story Text: Volunteers gathered on the banks of Yamuna River in Agra city, home to India's iconic Taj Mahal monument, on Sunday (September 26) to clean garbage in the river as they aimed to create awareness and promote its conservation to mark World Rivers Day.
Volunteers from a non-government organization picked trash accumulated in the river and at the river bank as buffaloes bathed and water from the drain flowed in the river.
"This is Yamuna view point but this is so dirty that nobody wants to come here. It stinks terribly. We thought that we should take baby steps towards preserving the river and then we will move on to the bigger steps," said a volunteer, Vijay Jadon.
Agra is struggling to cope with a polluting Yamuna River due to dumping of waste and administration neglect.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, around 70 percent of the pollution in the Yamuna River is human excrement and industrial effluents. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
