- Story Text: Britain's fuel crisis is starting to stabilise as gas stations have replenished some reserves, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said on Tuesday (September 28).
He added those signs would not be obvious in petrol stations yet, but "but this may be the hopeful sign."
Panic buying has left pumps dry across major cities and prompted the government to put the army on standby.
Shapps said Brexit "would have been a factor" in the shortage of drivers but added it "helped us to change rules, to be able to test more drivers more quickly".
A post-Brexit shortage of truck drivers, exacerbated by a halt to truck-driving-licence testing during COVID lockdowns and people leaving the haulage industry, has sown chaos through supply chains, raising the spectre of shortages and price rises in the run-up to Christmas.
