- Story Text: China's foreign ministry said on Wednesday (September 29) that China is "willing" to work with Japan's new leadership team after Japan's ruling party elected Fumio Kishida as its new leader, virtually ensuring he will become prime minister within days.
Speaking at a regular news conference in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China hopes "to encourage China-Japan relations to follow the correct path ".
Former foreign minister Kishida, who succeeds unpopular Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, is almost certain to become premier at a parliamentary session next Monday (October 4) because of the Liberal Democratic Party's majority in the lower house.
In terms of foreign policy, Kishida has said that Japan, in cooperation with the United States and other like-minded countries, should stand firm against the growing assertiveness of authoritarian regimes like China.
