- Story Text: Vatican on Friday (October 1) began requiring the 'Green Pass' health certificate showing proof of immunity from COVID-19 from visitors to the city state.
Swiss guards checked residents, workers and visitors willing to visit the tiny city state have the so-called Green Pass, a digital certificate which shows people have been vaccinated, tested negative or recovered from COVID-19.
The measure, that is already widely used in surrounding Italy, is part of the Vatican's efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19, were issued in response to a request from Pope Francis.
An exception will be made for those attending mass "for the time strictly necessary for the rite."
"For me vaccines should be obligatory", Rome resident Maurizio Passalacqua told Reuters. "I don't like when people say they are free to choose, but they are just free to kill other people".
"The green pass is fine for me, I had my vaccine in January," Rome resident Maria Caputo added.
The Green Pass is already mandatory to visit the Vatican Museums and the Scavi since 1 August, while in Italy it will be obligatory for all workers from October 15.
