- Story Text: Former Argentine president Mauricio Macri was summoned to court in Dolores, Buenos Aires Province on Thursday (October 28), amid spying allegations related to the sinking of the ARA San Juan submarine in 2017.
Macri arrived at court surrounded by crowds demonstrating for and against him and held a public address.
"Here I am in Dolores trying to understand this untimely summons, without grounds, in the middle of an electoral campaign. But we are here because we have always stood up. Because we are calm, we know what we did, and we know about our good intentions," he said.
The hearing was eventually postponed due to privacy clearance.
"We had to find out just today the court did not release the intelligence secret for Macri to testify on. The judge summoned us to know that Macri could not testify," said Pablo Lanusse, Macri's lawyer.
According to local media, due to Macri's status as former president questions over privacy and state secrets were brought before the court.
On November 15, 2017, 44 crew members from the ARA San Juan submarine went missing after the vessel was lost at sea.
A massive international search and rescue operation turned up no traces of the missing submarine. Hope of rescuing survivors was abandoned on November 30.
