- Story Text: Covered in reflective protective gear from head to toe, skilled craftsmen poured molten metal into molds to make the bronze statuettes -- known as "actors," -- for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, demonstrating for the media on Tuesday (January 17) at the American Fine Arts Foundry. Using the lost wax process, they start with a silicone mold that then allows them to reproduce the sculpture in wax. Then the wax gets treated with what is called ceramic mold, a ceramic material that will produce the mold that allows them to pour the statue into bronze.
After the metal has turned solid, the molds are broken, revealing a golden sculpture underneath. Artists then brush the statuette with a green-black patina. The finished award stands on black granite "The most important thing about this statue, it makes it different than all other statue is, if you drop this on your foot you're going to be very very sorry. It's 12 pounds, it's 16 inches tall, just it's enough if you can hoist it over your head and throw hurrah. If you can pull that off you're doing great," said SAG Awards Committee Vice Chair Daryl Anderson.
Each "actor" statuette carries a serial number engraved at its base. Since 1995, when the first "actor: statuettes were presented, 952 "actors" have been given out.
One of this year's nominees, "Fences" actor Mykelti Williamson talked about the special honor a SAG award holds for the acting community.
We work hard all the time but to be appreciated by your peers, I think says far more than it can mean by people who don't do what you do, all these actors who vote do exactly what I do, you know they get up and they go to work every day, and that's why it means so much," said Williamson, at the Foundry event.
The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be given out in Los Angeles on January 29 in a live telecast on the TBS and TNT networks. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
