- Story Text: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the Vietnam-Japan Economic forum on Tuesday (January 17, 2017) to discuss cooperation and development issues as he wound up his two-day visit to the South East Asian country.
Abe praised the support that Vietnam has provided to Japanese investors and highlighted the positive effects that these businesses have had on Vietnam's growing economy.
"At the moment, ASEAN is a growing economic region of the world, and Vietnam is right at the centre of it. There are more than 1600 Japanese companies operating in Vietnam. I highly appreciate the contribution that Japanese companies have made to for the development of Vietnam's economy through investment, job creation and technology transfer," he said. "I believe strongly that the Japanese businesses will continue to increase their presence so that the two countries can grow together"
Both Japan and Vietnam have also been strong supporters of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free-trade pact which looks to have stalled in the face of president-elect Donald Trump's pledge to withdraw the United States.
During his visit to Hanoi, Abe met with Vietnam's top leaders to discuss ways to boost cooperation, especially in the fields of economy and maritime security. Abe has promised Vietnam six new patrol boats while emphasising that the dispute over the South China Sea should be settled through talks and in accordance with international law. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
