- Story Text: For more than three years, 28-year-old Syrian engineer, Moaz Khabaity, has been working on creating a digital twin for the capital Damascus.
Picturing the exact same neighbourhoods and streets of the city, Khabaity says the digital map would be of great help in the post-war reconstruction as it represents the city with all its details.
Khabaity says the map could also help in making decisions on infrastructure development as planners can study the potential impact of their projects on the city first on the digital map before its practical application.
One of the young engineer's main challenges was designing the map without using a drone, which is banned in Syria. He instead used Google Earth to watch aerial views of Damascus and re-created the images in a three-dimensional format.
He plans to add the map to a website that citizens can access in order to ensure their participation in the planning and reconstruction of their own city in upcoming projects.
After finishing up the map of Damascus, Khabaity is now working on a digital twin of the city of Deraa.
