- Story Text: Iraq's Kurdistan region's Masoud Barzani said on Wednesday (January 18) he had discussed cooperation with Germany "in the fight against terrorism."
Barzani was speaking after a talk with German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen whose country "helped us in providing weapons and ammunition" for the peshmerga forces, the Kurdish president said.
According to him, Germany's support had achieved "good results."
Last August, the German military said it had resumed deliveries of weapons to Kurdistan after the government of the northern Iraqi region vowed to ensure the arms did not end up on the black market.
According to a defence ministry spokesman at the time, Germany had delivered 70 tonnes of weapons, including 1,500 rifles, 100 shoulder-fired rockets and three armored vehicles, to the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
