- Story Text: Unvaccinated Bavarians enjoyed their last weekend out on the streets of Munich on Saturday (November 20) before a lockdown for those not protected against COVID-19 goes into effect from next Wednesday.
Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder announced the latest coronavirus policies a day earlier when he also said that Christmas markets across the southern German state would be cancelled this year.
Munich's shopping streets were crowded as a police car was seen on patrol near Marienplatz square where stalls for the Christmas market had already been put up.
They were expected to be taken down again in the near future without having been opened this year.
"It should have happened much earlier and then we wouldn't be in this mess now," said Ralf Herbert of the measures.
A woman who gave her name as Sylvia said the restrictions were "justified. Look, there are so many ill people around right now. Unfortunately, the unvaccinated contribute to that situation and I don't really want to get infected."
Bavarian authorities said the lockdown for the unvaccinated was expected to last until mid-December in order to avoid a collapse of the health system.
According to state premier Soeder, Bavaria's seven-day incidence per 100,000 people stood at 1,500 for the unvaccinated on Friday (Nov. 19), for the vaccinated at 110.
Germany's overall COVID-19 incidence rate was at 362 on Saturday.
90% of intensive care unit beds in Bavaria are occupied by unvaccinated people, according to Soeder.
