Four topless activists disrupted a rally attended by supporters of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who gathered to mark the 46th anniversary of the dictator's death in Madrid on Sunday (November 21).
Femen activists were detained by Spanish police after chanting “to fascism, nor honour nor glory†and waving signs against fascism.
The women had painted messages on their bodies reading: "Stop 20N" which stands for November 20, the date of Franco's death.
Franco supporters waved pre-constitutional Spanish flags and showed symbols from Falange, the fascist party which is integrated into the coalition "ADÑ" created for the 2019 European Parliament election.
Franco's exhumation in 2019 is the most significant move in years by Spanish authorities to lay the ghost of the general whose legacy still divides the country he dominated for nearly four decades.
During Franco's 1939-1975 rule, tens of thousands of his enemies were killed and imprisoned in a campaign to wipe out dissent, and as many as 500,000 combatants and civilians died in the preceding civil war, which split the nation in two.
