- Story Text: Celebrations broke out in India's northern Chandigarh city as Harnaaz Sandhu was titled Miss Universe in the Israeli resort of Eilat during a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the international pageant on Monday (December 13).
21-year-old Sandhu who is pursuing a masters degree in public administration was crowned by outgoing Miss Universe, Andrea Meza of Mexico during the ceremony.
Sandhu's family was elated on hearing the news about her winning.
"She has made me and the entire family proud…the Sandhu family proud. I am not able to handle my happiness. I am unable to think. My eyes are also watery (with tears of joy) and many things are going on in my mind, which are very difficult for me to express," said Harnaaz Sandhu's mother, Dr. Ravinder Kaur Sandhu.
Students at Harnaaz's college, Post Graduate Government College for Girls also celebrated the occasion with dance and music as they congratulated her for making the country proud.
"When I woke up in the morning, I got an Instagram video of her…she was very happy, she was crying and when I got to know that she is from our college I was literally so much happy," said a student, Deepanshi Thakur.
Israel hosted the contest in the Red Sea resort of Eilat amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and after imposing travel restrictions to try to stave off the Omicron coronavirus variant.
Harnaaz's victory brings the crown to India after a gap of 21 years, the earlier two titles were won by Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
