Summary:As construction of Venezuela's giant Guri Hydro-Electric dam moved nearer completion the waters started to rise and so did the threat to local animal life. A rescue operation directed by the International Society for the Protection of Animals was launched to drive herds south, away from the dam, towards the border with Guyana. Those unable to flee the oncoming waters were picked up in small craft and plucked to safety by helicopters. NOTE: Date is approximate.
