- Story Text: Germany will commemorate the anniversary of the Berlin Christmas market truck attack on Sunday (December 19) for the second year amid stringent coronavirus measures.
Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links, hijacked a truck on Dec. 19, 2016, killing its driver and then ploughing it into a crowded Berlin Christmas market, killing 11 more people and injuring dozens of others.
Subsequent investigations exposed failings by intelligence agencies who had halted surveillance of Amri after concluding he posed no danger.
Chancellor Angela Merkel paid a surprise visit to the site of the Christmas market that was attacked last year, where a permanent memorial for victims will be unveiled Tuesday.
Many of the relatives have complained about feeling neglected by the German government after the attack.
A memorial at the "Gedaechtniskirche" (Church of Remembrance) shows the names of the victims carved on the steps of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church near the scene of the attack. Additionally, security measure for the Christmas market, and many others, was increased.
