- Story Text: Revellers the southern Andalusian city of Ronda gathered in the main city square to welcome 2022 on Saturday (January 1) as Spain was battling a surge in coronavirus cases.
Revellers ate 12 grapes in time with the midnight bell chimes of the old clock on the Parador Hotel, as part of a Spanish tradition.
One family chanted "Go away, COVID," after toasting with sparkling wine.
Spain's regions have control of health policy and New Year festivity restrictions around the country ranged from the strictest measures in Catalonia, with a curfew from 1 am to 6 am (0000-0500 GMT) and the closure of nightlife establishments, to the most relaxed restrictions in Madrid where the traditional celebrations returned to the city centre for the first time since they were cancelled in 2020.
Spain has reported record cases, with its 14-day infection rate reaching 1,775 cases per 100,000 people on Thursday (December 29).
